Innovation is GREAT

The annual Bournemouth Air Festival never ceases to amaze with it’s incredible displays from world renowned pilots, fast jets and aerobatics. In 2018 it was turned up a notch and for the first time featured a jet suit display team. Gravity Industries, founded in the UK by inventor Richard Browning, brought their latest fully operational jet suit to wow the crowds packed across Bournemouth’s beaches.

The GREAT Britain Campaign, promoting all the key interests for travel to Britain, have partnered with Gravity to highlight the innovation within and what could well be the next frontier of human flight.

As well as producing the official highlights wrap up film for the Air Festival we were also commissioned to create a short 60 second video of the jet suit demonstration on behalf of the GREAT Campaign. With help from the fantastic team at Bournemouth Tourism we developed a storyboard to include all aspects of the flight, from suiting up and firing the engines, to the flight itself, ending with touchdown and photos with fans.

It was a fantastic experience to work with Gravity and the GREAT Campaign. For me personally it was incredibly hard to keep the focus on the camera position without wanting to watch from my own eyes the very spectacle of a human in flight with small but powerful jet engines on each arm. How cool is that!

Thinking Big: Bournemouth Airport

On Saturday 27th October 2018 I stood amongst several spectators and avid aviation enthusiasts, watching a British Airways 747 arrive at Bournemouth Airport. Not for carrying fare paying passengers, but for some maintenance and repair work following a technical issue at New York’s JFK airport.

It reminded me of way back in November 2002, when I watched a chartered 747 take off from Bournemouth, flying directly to New York for a Christmas shopping trip. My dad shot the video of its departure, which has been viewed over 8 million times on YouTube.

And this got me thinking. Here in 2018, on the ground at Bournemouth Airport is the iconic Boeing 747 in full British Airways colours. It’s an aircraft in BAs fleet which is capable of carrying up to 345 people. And all of these seats were empty. By now I’d have expected to see BA and other major UK and international airlines occupying the airport’s often vacant terminal parking slots, flying daily routes to holiday and business destinations. For me these empty seats are the symbol of a missed opportunity that Bournemouth has suffered for far too long. But perhaps things are about to change.

The airport has transformed since that day in 2002, with major infrastructure and technology improvements, plus a brand new departures and arrivals terminal building. In December 2017, Bournemouth Airport was acquired by The Rigby Group, managed by their Aviation Division through Regional & City Airports. The new owners have promised a bold strategic vision for its future, and within its first year have already achieved outstanding results. For example, global aviation services company, Gama Aviation, have recently opened a new hub in a large hangar on the airfield. This along with seeing the prestige of British Airways sending one of their aircraft here for line maintenance form two of many reasons why I believe BOH may finally be on its way to a big and exciting future.

Our office is based next to the airport on the Aviation Business Park, which is fast becoming a major business hub in Bournemouth. The expansion going on around us is incredible to see, from the brand new Curtiss-Wright building nextdoor to the infrastructure and road improvements around the perimeter. Bournemouth Airport is primed for growth and opportunity, and as a business director looking to network and make connections (and as an aviation enthusiast!) I am highly optimistic about what’s coming next.

Viral Video: Boeing 747 Take Off from Bournemouth Airport

I love airplanes. Especially big jets! I’ve seen many fascinating visitors to Bournemouth Airport over the years including Concorde, the Lancaster, Sea Vixen, Red Arrows, and so many more. But on 18th November 2002 there was a sight I’ll never forget. I was stood next to my dad on the edge of Matchams Lane along with a small crowd of people who had stopped to see what was happening. We were looking west directly down Bournemouth’s Runway 26 where at the opposite end sat a Boeing 747 jet airliner, with engines idling awaiting it’s take off clearance.

Many large jets have visited Bournemouth over the years but this was the first passenger flight of its kind. Local travel agent Bath Travel chartered the aircraft for a short Christmas shopping trip to New York, flying direct from Bournemouth.

My dad never goes anywhere without a video camera, and today was no exception. He had the aircraft fully in the frame when its engines spooled up to begin its take off roll. As its speed rose with engines at take off power it kicked up a massive cloud of spray from the damp runway surface. Well past the halfway point, the 747 was still firmly on the ground, accelerating. For a split second, it looked like it was running out of runway, especially given the perspective from our vantage point. Even a bloke stood next to us on the video can be heard saying “he’s not gonna to make it!”.

Just before reaching the runway threshold, at what looked like the last moment, the aircraft pitched upwards and became airborne, passing over our heads just a few seconds later with its engines still screaming.

The resulting video has gathered over 8 million views on YouTube and we’re super proud to have it as part of our history!

Our office is based next to Bournemouth Airport on the Aviation Business Park. Its new owners, the Rigby Group, have promised a bold strategic vision for its future through its companies Regional & City Airports and Rigby Real Estate. We’re looking forward to many more exciting things (and big jets!) to come in the future.

Project: Dorset LEP Showreel Film

Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, a business-led private and public sector partnership, promotes local economic growth and prosperity across a variety of projects and investment initiatives around the county.

Plato Video was commissioned to produce the official showreel film to be presented at their inaugural business conference event at Bournemouth University on 13th April 2018.

LEP Project.png

The video required an insight in to not only what Dorset LEP is but also a summary of its past, present and future initiatives, using a variety of text based slides, still imagery and interviews with x5 key business representatives to guide the content.

We love working across a whole spectrum of business and industry and this project with Dorset LEP did not disappoint. It was fascinating to work with and learn from a small selection of different sectors based in our home county of Dorset including Aerospace, Real Estate, Marine Electronics and Gin Distillery.

As part of the post production process we designed and animated a Dorset themed screen template which displayed all text based information when required. The video content was then placed appropriately amongst the slides to balance the content.

The full video was shown to an audience of over 150 business leaders and representatives at the conference and we’re thrilled with the positive feedback we have received.

Pitch Hero Testimonial Film

Not often we get contacted by potential clients on the other side of the world!

Pitch Hero, based in New Zealand and specialising in the very familiar profession of video production, contacted us with a request to produce a testimonial film featuring one of their clients, Ensign Communications, a wired and wireless services company based near to us in Wareham, Dorset.

Previously, Pitch Hero produced a short animated feature for Ensign Communications advertising their services. Ensign were more than happy to provide a glowing review.

Custom Creations Promotional Film

During the second half of 2017 we worked Custom Creations, a bespoke hand crafted furniture company based in Verwood, Dorset. Their website was being redesigned by Westbourne based digital agency, Upperdog, who kindly recommended us to create their client's new promotional film to feature prominently on the home page.

The video needed to capture an insight in to the Custom Creations production process to show the friendly personality and professionalism that the family owned firm is well known and recommended for, including:

  • Discussing options directly with customers in the showroom
  • Measuring the space in the customer’s home and initial sketch drawings
  • Manufacturing the individual furniture parts in-house
  • Packing and delivery to the customer’s home
  • Final installation and assembly

The shoot took then took place to capture all of the above stages, both at the offices and workshop of Custom Creations and at the home of one of their customers so that we could capture their brand new wardrobe and desk being fitted using a timelapse sequence.

IMG_0574.jpg

After piecing all of our best footage together in post production, the final Custom Creations film is here!

We then created a second version of this video for their social media, which we made in to a square format using branded panels and text on screen to describe each step of the process. This is how it currently appears on Facebook:

Jo, James and the team at Custom Creations were a pleasure to work with and we’re thrilled to share this kind review that was left for us on Google:

Charles and Harry created and produced a Video for us and we were delighted with the end result. They took the time to get to know us and understand our Company and what we were trying to achieve, and the result was fantastic and professional. They are always ready to advise and they give you complete confidence throughout the whole process.

Head Over Heels Gymnastics - Floor Beam DVD and App Video

Gemma Coles is the founder and coach of Head Over Heels Gymnastics, a Bournemouth based gymnastics club, which operates in a variety of schools and public settings, providing coaching and guidance to young gymnast enthusiasts looking to perfect their techniques.

Through sharing her passion for gymnastics, Gemma has made a highly successful career in coaching young talent, both in a class setting and more recently, books and videos.

We’re immensely proud to have worked with Gemma, first in 2014 with the production of a DVD and mobile app videos to accompany her first book on Floor Skills. The video proved to be a great success selling both in physical format online and through mobile app downloads on Apple and Android platforms.

Gemma1.jpg

This year in 2017 we worked with Gemma again to produce a brand new set of videos to go with her Floor Beam skills book. The shoot took place over the course of one day in July at a local gym club, where we captured a total of 42 video sequences, perfectly illustrated and guided by Gemma along with her (very!) talented young gymnasts.

All of the videos are divided up in to categories which are navigated using the DVD menu that we designed to match the style of the book as closely as possible. Each video selected features an opening and closing screen and post-it notes which appear on screen to offer additional guidance where required. To add a new dynamic and upbeat tone, we also sourced a background music track for each video.

Here are a couple tasters of Gemma’s new Floor Beam skills video:

Visit the Head Over Heels website to order your copy, or search ‘Head Over Heels About Gymnastics’ in the Apple and Google Play App Stores.

Event Video - The National Airsoft Festival

Blog by Charles Fynn

Me trying to blend in at NAF 2017! Photo by Manicthing Photography

Me trying to blend in at NAF 2017! Photo by Manicthing Photography

Every year since 2007 Bournemouth based airsoft retailer, Zero One Airsoft, hosts the National Airsoft Festival in Ringwood, Dorset. It is now one of the major events in the airsoft calendar, and in August 2017 welcomed 2,500 players from across the country and Europe over its 3 day duration.

Airsoft is often compared to Paintball but unlike marking their targets, airsoft guns use small BB pellets as ammunition, and are available as full scale replicas of real world weapons. Players take part in mock combat / military scenarios and win by not just shooting their opponents but completing objectives and tasks set by their team.

Each year since 2014 I have produced the official film for this event, capturing all of the activities around the festival site including the camping area, shooting range, food and drink stands, the shop, and most of all, the airsoft action. When out amongst the players I always try to keep a low profile so as not to distract or give away their position to the enemy, but I like to get as close to the action as possible. It comes at a price as it’s impossible not to get shot in the process, regardless of how much hi-vis I’m wearing!

Below is the official video of the 2017 National Airsoft Video which at the time of writing has already been viewed over 16,000 times on Facebook and will be widely used as an advertising campaign across the UK and Europe to promote ticket sales for next year.

Social Media Video and Square Format

Videos on social media are rapidly becoming more popular on mobiles and tablets, which presents you with a big opportunity to use video to a much greater advantage.

Working with the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2017, we produced a number of short videos in advance of the event, which were mainly used for advertising to visitors about everything that was taking place around them. Each clip was produced in a square format by adding branded panels and messaging above and below the video. This guarantees the content will fill as much of the screen as possible, regardless of whether the mobile or tablet is held upright or in landscape mode.

Online video is rapidly becoming more customisable, and with the changes in the way we access and watch it, you have far greater ability to grab attention and get your message across than ever before.

Event Video: The Dorset Plane Pull

The Dorset Plane Pull is an annual charity event like no other.

Hosted near the sunny south coast at Bournemouth Airport, the challenge for each competing team of up to 20 people is to pull a fully operational Boeing 737 passenger jet, weighing in at 35,000 Kg, across a distance of 50 meters. This mighty effort raises thousands of pounds for charities both locally and nationally.

Since 2013 Plato Video have been proud to be part of the event as its official videographers. Each year we produce the official highlights film and until 2015 also produced an official DVD to help raise it's profile and raise further funds. Below is our highlights film from 2016.

Following the 2016 event we changed things up slightly and replaced the DVD with a series of short videos that could be shared on social media to celebrate all of the teams that took part and encourage them to share with their friends and fans. Each video, roughly 1 minute in length, features one of the competing teams, along with the event's own personal host and expert interviewer, Colin van Geffan. His task is to commentate each pull and interview the teams both before and after to get a full sense of the fun, excitement and achievement that comes with it. Here’s an example featuring the winners of 2016, team Al of a Pull.

Now with an inventory of video content for use as promotional assets, the Dorset Plane Pull’s social media team have been sharing one of these videos per week since May 2017 in the hope of building awareness and hype for the forthcoming event on Monday August 28th 2017.

Bournemouth Air Festival Student Film Competition

Creative digital marketing agency, Createful were recently awarded the task of redesigning the Bournemouth Air Festival’s website in time for this years event as well as developing a brand new mobile app.

In partnership with the team from Bournemouth Tourism, Createful also organised a competition with students from the Bournemouth Arts University. The challenge was to create a short promotional film for the Air Festival lasting no longer than 20 seconds. All they needed was a big library of footage to work from, and that’s where we came in! We supplied the team with our highlights films from previous years, each of which are over 3 minutes long and packed full of our very best shots, so to condense everything down to less than half a minute is certainly no easy task.

Following all of the fantastic entrants and judging, we were thrilled to view the official winning entry below.

A big well done and congratulations to students Natalie Carr and Emily Wood for submitting the winner.

Following on from their success we are delighted to learn that the winning film will be shown on advertising screens at selected UK shopping centres, including most notably Bluewater in Kent and Birmingham’s Bullring.

5 wedding video ideas you may not have heard of

By Harry Fynn

Harrys Wedding Films.jpg

Wedding videos are a fantastic way to reminisce over the events of the day. The wedding video production style, quality and budget are often amongst the main things to consider when choosing a wedding video company, but there are other, more unique options too that you may not have heard of. Here are 5 of them…

1. Cine Film

For vintage fans I offer wedding films that are shot the original way, on real Super 8mm cine film. I also offer contemporary video and film combination packages.

2. Self Edit

Editing is a big part of my wedding video services but occasionally the couples themselves either might like to edit it themselves or simply flick through the unedited video file collection.

3. GoPro

This is where you get involved. Grab hold of the selfie stick or wear one of my chest mounts and be as creative as you like, especially on the dance floor!

4. Live Stream

Live streaming video is one of the newest and highly popular features on Facebook where anyone can simply go live through their phone. I can offer to live stream the video from your wedding ceremony to Facebook or YouTube for all your friends and family who couldn’t make it in person to enjoy.

5. Bespoke Packages

If you see anything you don’t like in one of my packages or are looking for something completely different, ask me! Create your own wedding video package, from what you want captured to what gets produced at the end.

All of the above are available amongst or in addition to my wedding videography packages. For more details have a look at my wedding video and vintage film pages.

**Press Release** Plato Video is now a limited company!

Brothers Charles and Harry Fynn have become Directors of their father’s Bournemouth based video firm under the new name of Plato Video Ltd.

Both Charles and Harry have been working together since 2012 with the aim of bringing a new style, energy and client base to the business with creative, professional video production being at the core of what it does best.

Charles said “it’s an exciting time for Plato Video. We’re thrilled to have grown the business to this point whilst developing an impressive portfolio. As a Limited company we’ll be looking to do so much more!”

Plato Video over the last five years has produced a variety of professional video content both for corporate and event video, working on and delivering a number of high profile contracts including the official tourism videography for the award winning Bournemouth Air Festival.

In 2016 the firm collected an award from entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den star, Theo Paphitis, after being selected as a winner for his regular Small Business Sunday event on social media.

Harry Fynn has become a highly recommended wedding videographer locally through Plato’s sub brand, Harry’s Wedding Films. Harry has worked at a number of prestigious wedding venues capturing and producing stunning motion pictures for happy couples on their big day.

Harry said “I love the diversity of our business. No day is ever the same, which is testament to our ability to adapt and produce a variety of different video regardless of the industry or sector. One day we could be capturing a wedding on the beach, the next we might be in a factory, on a farm or even a race circuit”.

Charles and Harry’s father and original founder of Plato Video, Lionel Fynn, said “I am delighted that the boys have this opportunity to take over the business for themselves and to shape its future. I am looking forward to seeing the results!”

How to write a killer video production brief

There are several factors to consider when deciding on a video production company. What’s their experience, have they handled a project like this before, are they recommended, and especially for the budget conscious, how much do they charge? It’s always important to ensure that when you contact production companies you do so with as much information as possible. This will help you get the best and most accurate information in return including creative input, advice and associated pricing.

Here are a few handy suggestions to include wherever relevant with your corporate video production brief:

  • An introduction to your business with a link to your website
  • An overview of the type of video you’re looking for e.g. Explainer video
  • The storyline of the video – what you want to project from the product / service including personality and tone
  • Links to similar videos you may have seen online
  • Your target audience
  • What you’re looking to achieve from the video (attract new business, educate existing customers, etc)
  • Where the shoot will take place
  • How long you expect the shoot to take or time that has been allocated
  • Whether reading a pre-prepared script will be involved
  • If a narrator / voiceover artist is required
  • Where the video will feature (YouTube, Facebook, etc)
  • The target running length required
  • Text / call to action / branding that needs to feature
  • If background music is required and the preferred genre
  • If there is a deadline

Don't worry if you don't know the answer to all of these points. Promotional video production companies will often be more than happy to help advise and come up with creative ideas to help you get the right result.

A video production service isn’t necessarily a costly exercise. If you have a budget in mind or a maximum spend limit, make sure to include this with your brief. Always ask questions if you have any.

If you’ve got a brief you’d like to share with us, get in touch and send it across!

Beach huts with a BIG difference!

In the latter half of 2016 we were tasked with producing promotional video content of Bournemouth’s fantastic new Beach Lodges. These superb ‘mini houses’ have recently been installed on the promenade between Boscombe and Southbourne and offer something completely different to your standard beach hut – you can sleep in them!

Our first task was to produce a timelapse of their construction. We were provided with a sequence of stills taken during the construction phase of two beach lodges, which we pieced together to bring the timelapse to life…

Later in the year whilst the interiors were being fitted we visited the construction site to complete the next project of producing an interior video to showcase the facilities on offer. We were loaned a beach lodge to work with, which had already been fitted with all of its primary features including a kitchenette, bathroom, dining area and upstairs bedroom, all carefully crafted by the experts at Ecologic Developments. The attention to detail, professionalism and pride put in to making these stunning new beach lodges is simply brilliant. They will make for a great new way to enjoy the delights of this seaside town.

The video currently features on their brand new website where bookings and full information are available. Check out www.bournemouthbeachlodges.co.uk

The True Business Benefits of Video Marketing

Chances are you’ve probably already seen some business video marketing today, whether this was on TV, on a desktop or on your mobile. Video advertising is a hugely accessible marketing tool which can be tailored to its audience across various platforms and used not just to entertain but to interact and engage.

By adopting corporate video production in to a marketing strategy, businesses are able to shout about their products and services in a whole different way, whether as an explainer video, blog post, product showcase, event highlights and much more. Taking advantage of video production enables a whole host of benefits that are there for the taking. Some of the more notable ones include:

Website optimised with Google

People searching for products and services that you offer may well have a better chance at finding you if a video of it exists. Google owns the video streaming giant YouTube, and so any video attributed to your business has the ability to feature in to Google search results.

Tailor your video to an audience

It’s important to consider who you want your video to be seen by. Facebook offers you the opportunity to promote your page with a sponsored link featuring your video. You can also specify the demographics that you wish to target in your campaign and set a budget level that works for you.

Enhance brand awareness

Video allows a company to speak directly to its audience using visuals, moving images and audio which are all vital to brand communications.

It’s adaptable

Video can be adapted for any business and remember it isn’t always about cold hard selling. Shape the video around the message you want to get across. Be serious, be funny, be creative.

It’s affordable

Video is a very affordable media tool to businesses of all sizes and so the benefits are no longer reserved for those that can afford the prime time TV slot during Coronation Street. All you need is the right video production company to get the job done.

We offer a highly adaptable video production service and have experience in working across various sectors. See our promotional and event video pages for more details on what we offer.

Get in touch to discuss your next video project.

Website Banner Videos

Website banner videos are a fantastic way to showcase your company online. Unlike a standard promotional online video, a web banner video will usually play automatically and silently in the background of a home page. The idea of a promotional website banner video is to offer visitors a brief insight in to your business with a focus on its most visual aspects from the people who work within it to a closer look at the functional aspects such as manufacturing, finished products, services etc. First impressions are always important and this type of online video is a great way to get the right result.

In the latter half of 2016 we had the pleasure of working with Upperdog, a Bournemouth based website design, marketing and development agency, who were looking for a banner video to play on their brand new website.

Their brief was for us to capture the real working environment behind Upperdog with less clichés and staged content which can often look as though it was lifted out of a stock footage collection. This approach allowed us to create something which was completely original and conduct our work with minimal disruption. All of the footage shown in the video fully represents Upperdog in their day-to-day environment.

Working with Upperdog was great fun for us and we wouldn’t hesitate in recommending their services for websites having seen first hand the work that they do. Plus who could resist working with Milo, their full time office dog? It’s often said that you should never work with children or animals. We can happily say that Milo bucks that trend and was a delight to work with, even despite taking an interest in Harry’s leg…

Top Tips for Hiring a Video Production Company

Today video is everywhere. It’s almost impossible to scroll through Facebook or do a Google search without seeing a video pop up somewhere. Video is a growing platform and a very affordable tool for businesses of all sizes for use both off and online whether it’s a product / venue showcase, event highlight montage, an interview or explainer video.

More often than not a video for your business needs more than just the smartphone treatment if its to get the right message across and so it’s important to consider the professionals in corporate video production. Chances are you’ll likely find a wide variety to choose from in your local area from small specialists to big agencies. Here are a couple top tips for what to look for when hiring a supplier for your promotional video production project.

Experience and Adaptability

Does the company have a good level of experience working across multiple sectors? Take a look at their portfolio (if available) and see what types of industry they have worked in. The diversity and standard of their portfolio should tell you everything you need to know about their adaptability to a project similar to yours. It’s important to know if they are likely to interpret and deliver on your brief.

Testimonials

They might do a good job but what are they like to work with? Can you get hold of them easily? Would they be able to meet a tight deadline? See if they come with recommendations for their work. You could even call up one of their previous clients from their portfolio and ask directly.

Quality of work

Those offering a video production service often have their own style that makes them stand out against the rest. As with experience above, be sure to check the quality of their work and compare it with others.

Price

After considering everything above, sometimes the eventual decision rests with how much it will cost. So when making initial contact be sure to give them as much info as possible about your video production project so that they can give you an estimate. They will need to know roughly how much time to allocate both to the video shoot and post production / editing as well as the additional equipment that will be needed such as sound and lighting.

Ask Questions

If you’re unsure about anything, just ask! Video suppliers often go that extra mile to help you out with any queries and may also have a range of creative input that they can offer in order to give your video that added feature to make it stand out from the rest.

These little handy tips above will certainly help in finding you the right video supplier to work with. Give us a shout if you have any queries or would like to learn more.

The Flywheel Festival

In July of 2016 we brought our event style videography to the Flywheel Festival in Oxfordshire.

The festival features an array of vintage aviation, motoring and military endeavour. Based at Bicester Heritage, the event brings these iconic machines of the past back to life for all visitors to experience up close with some highly impressive demonstrations, from the historic racers on the track to the incredible Great War Display Team re-enacting a dog fight from the First World War.

We captured all of the action not just from the ground but also up in the air. Charles managed to get a ride in an original 1940s Tiger Moth, courtesy of Chris Thompson of Finest Hour Experiences. Some of the aerial footage has been used in our highlights video below.

Enjoy!

The Donington Historic Festival

Earlier this year during the early May Bank Holiday weekend we brought our event style videography to the Donington Historic Festival. We were commissioned by Historic Promotions to produce the official promotional highlights film for the event, which is now in its 6th year and held at the famous Donington Park race circuit in Leicestershire.

It is primarily a vintage themed event featuring a variety of classic race cars spanning about 9 different decades from the 1930s right up to the 2000s. The festival features much more than fantastic racing action including rides with the Caterham Experience, parades, rally cars, historic go karts and so much more. There’s also the chance for the crowd and enthusiasts to get right up close to the action both in the grandstands and by the paddock area where the mechanics work their magic on the classic racers.

It was our first event at an official race circuit and needless to say we loved every minute of it. Behind the scenes everyone was so welcoming to us. Some seasoned photographers even gave a little of their time to tell us about the circuit and the best places to stand. We particularly loved the dedication and commitment from the organisers, staff and the volunteers who make the event what it is.

Enjoy our highlights film!
